Knightsbridge Coffee Shop was conceived as a complete interior intervention: transforming an empty shell into a fully realised hospitality space.
The brief called for a contemporary café grounded in biophilic principles, where material, light, and spatial clarity work together to create a calm and immersive environment.
From the outset, the project was approached as an architectural composition rather than a decorative exercise.
The Project
Project:
Knightsbridge Coffee Shop
Type:
Cafe Interior
Location:
Bryanston, Johannesburg
Scope:
Full Interior Architecture and Design
Services:
Interior Architecture and Spatial Planning · Joinery and Material Specification · Biophilic Integration

Design Thinking
The design explores the relationship between structure, material, and nature.
Working from a blank canvas allowed the studio to define every element with intention, establishing a cohesive spatial language across the entire interior.
The approach is grounded in material honesty, where surfaces are allowed to express their natural character, and in spatial clarity, where visual noise is removed to create a calm, legible environment.
Biophilic integration is treated as an architectural principle rather than an applied layer, introducing living systems as an integral part of the space.
Rather than layering elements, the design is reduced to essential gestures that carry both function and identity.

Spatial Experience
The café is organised around a clear operational flow - balancing efficiency with customer experience.
The service counter anchors the space, forming a strong horizontal element that defines circulation and interaction.
Seating areas are positioned to maintain openness, while still creating moments of intimacy.
Vertical volume plays a key role.
The height of the space is emphasised to enhance light distribution and prevent the darker material palette from feeling heavy.

Material Strategy
Material selection was central to the project, with a restrained palette developed to ensure consistency and longevity.
Caesarstone surfaces were used across all joinery, providing durability, refinement, and visual continuity, while dark textured finishes ground the space and introduce depth.
Warm timber flooring softens the overall composition, complemented by matte wall finishes and tiled surfaces that create subtle variation without visual clutter.
All joinery was custom-designed and fabricated, ensuring precise alignment between form, function, and material expression.

Biophilic Integration
Biophilic principles are embedded into the architecture of the space.
A living green wall acts as a central spatial feature, not as decoration, but as an integral part of the interior system.
It introduces texture, movement, and a direct connection to natural elements within a controlled, contemporary framework.
Natural light is carefully considered, allowing it to interact with materials throughout the day and reinforce a sense of wellbeing within the space

Outcome
Knightsbridge Coffee Shop demonstrates the impact of designing from first principles.
By controlling every layer, from spatial planning to joinery, materials, lighting, and furniture, the project achieves a unified and intentional interior.
The result is a coffee shop that feels: Grounded. Calm. Considered.
A space where contemporary design and biophilic thinking coexist, creating an environment that supports both function and experience with quiet confidence.
