The studio

A Studio Shaped by Refined African Living

NIZARRA is an Afro-modern design studio focused on interiors, cultural design direction, and collectible home expressions.

Founded in South Africa as an interior design practice, the studio has evolved into a multidisciplinary design house working across interior environments, surface design, pattern development, and creative direction for spaces, products, and brands.

Our work is guided by a belief that African-inspired spaces can be both deeply rooted and globally refined. Expressed through material, proportion, and spatial clarity.

At its core, NIZARRA explores how African heritage can be expressed in modern, elevated ways, through pattern, texture, form, and atmosphere.

Founder & Creative Director

Kgomotso Malope

Inspired by craftsmanship, symbolism, and spatial storytelling, Motso founded NIZARRA to explore how African identity shapes contemporary living. The approach is not to replicate tradition, but to reinterpret it, creating interiors that feel both refined and deeply grounded in place.

studio evolution

NIZARRA builds on a legacy of culturally rooted design.

Under its previous identity, MoTSO DeSIGNED, the studio developed a body of work centred on African-inspired interiors and product design, thus establishing the foundation for its current direction.

As the work evolved, so did the need for a more defined and globally positioned identity.

NIZARRA represents that transition. A refined and focused expression of the studio’s design philosophy.

Design philosophy

NIZARRA approaches design through four essential elements.

Space

We treat space as the foundation of every project.

Layouts are designed to create clarity, balance, and movement.

Light

Light shapes atmosphere.

Natural light is treated as a design material that reveals texture, colour, and form.

Material

Materials anchor a space.

The studio favours natural finishes that age beautifully over time.

Texture

Texture introduces warmth and depth.

Layered surfaces create interiors that feel tactile and human.

Design Language

Cultural Influence

African design traditions contain a rich language of pattern, symbolism, rhythm, and craft.

NIZARRA interprets these influences through a contemporary lens, integrating cultural references in ways that feel architectural rather than decorative.

The result is interiors that are both globally refined and locally grounded.

NIZARRA operates through a distinct spatial language - grounded in material honesty, cultural depth, and architectural clarity.

Our work explores three core directions:

A warm, Afro-modern living room filled with soft natural daylight. A neutral L-shaped sofa sits against a textured clay-toned wall, styled with earthy cushions in rust, beige, and taupe. Above it, a large abstract artwork in soft sand tones creates a calm focal point. Sunlight filters through sheer curtains on the left, casting gentle shadows across the space. A sculptural stone coffee table with ceramic decor rests on a woven rug, while a large floor vase with dried grass and wooden side tables add natural

Cultural, layered, and expressive

selected collaboration

African-inspired luxury interior design featuring wood wall paneling, Africa silhouette shelving, sculptural decor, leather lounge chair, and organic coffee table in a warm, modern living space.

Under its previous identity, the studio was selected by Lexus South Africa to design a conceptual space for Decorex SA - translating brand philosophy into a spatial experience through material, form, and atmosphere.

This collaboration reflects NIZARRA’s ability to engage with design beyond decoration. Working at the intersection of concept, culture, and space.

Alongside interior design, NIZARRA develops a collection of design editions including wallpapers, art, ceramics, and soft furnishings.

These pieces extend the language of the space into everyday living, allowing interiors to be experienced beyond architecture.
