Kyalami Guest Apartment

This project involved the transformation of a two-bedroom apartment into a refined short-term residence, designed to balance everyday comfort with a quiet expression of African identity.

The intention was to create a space that feels calm, cohesive, and considered, suitable for both rest and temporary living.

The Project

Design Thinking

The project was shaped by constraint.

Key furniture pieces, including the sofas, coffee table, and dining set were retained and became the starting point for the design process. This required a careful rethinking of spatial flow, proportion, and visual balance.

Rather than introducing excess, the approach focused on refinement, allowing the space to feel intentional without being overworked.

Spatial Experience

A warm, neutral palette was introduced to unify the interior and soften the overall atmosphere. Layers of texture were used subtly through textiles, finishes, and decorative elements to create depth without visual heaviness.

The layout was adjusted to improve movement and clarity within the space, ensuring each area feels defined yet connected.

Natural light plays an important role in the experience of the apartment, interacting with surfaces and materials to create a shifting, lived-in quality throughout the day.

Material & Atmosphere

Materials were selected for their ability to feel grounded and timeless.

Soft fabrics, warm tones, and tactile finishes contribute to a space that feels both
welcoming and composed, avoiding sharp contrasts or overly decorative interventions.

The result is an environment that prioritises ease, comfort, and visual harmony.

Outcome

The completed apartment offers a balanced living environment that supports both functionality and aesthetic clarity.

It is a space designed not only for short stays, but for a sense of pause. Where
simplicity, warmth, and restraint define the overall experience.
