This project explores the design of a poolside pavilion conceived as an extension of the home. A space for gathering, dining, and quiet retreat within a garden setting.
The intention was to create a structure that feels integrated, grounded, and effortless in its presence.
The Project
Project:
House Pool Pavilion
Type:
Residential
Location:
Bryanston, Johannesburg

Design Thinking
The pavilion was approached as both an architectural element and a social space.
Positioned alongside the pool, the structure establishes a clear relationship between water, landscape, and built form. The design prioritises openness, allowing the pavilion to remain visually connected to the garden while still offering a sense of shelter and enclosure.
Proportion and alignment were carefully considered to ensure the structure sits naturally within its surroundings, neither dominating nor disappearing

Spatial Experience
The pavilion is organised around a central dining area, designed to accommodate both everyday outdoor use and informal gatherings.
Circulation flows easily between the house, the pool, and the pavilion, creating a continuous outdoor living experience. The open-sided design allows air and light to move freely through the space, reinforcing a sense of ease and permeability.
The structure frames views of the garden while providing a shaded environment that can be used throughout the day.

Material & Atmosphere
A restrained palette of natural materials was selected to anchor the pavilion within its landscape context.
Timber elements introduce warmth, while darker structural tones provide contrast and definition. The material combination creates a balance between lightness and solidity.
The atmosphere is calm and understated, shaped more by proportion, light, and texture than by decoration.

Outcome
The pavilion functions as a natural extension of the home. A place where indoor and outdoor living converge.
