Lexus × NIZARRA

Decorex Johannesburg

A spatial installation exploring how contemporary African expression can translate the idea of authentic luxury.

A collaboration shaped by design philosophy

NIZARRA was invited by Lexus South Africa to participate in the Decorex Designer Pods - a curated platform bringing together selected designers to interpret brand philosophy through space.

The collaboration explored how Lexus’ approach to design, defined by precision, material integrity, and quiet refinement, could be translated into an interior environment.

Rather than creating a display, the intention was to create a space.

A space to pause. To observe. To experience.

This project marked a pivotal moment for the studio, positioning its work within a broader conversation between culture, craftsmanship, and contemporary design.

Note:
This project was originally completed under the studio’s former identity, MoTSO DeSIGNED.

The Brief

To interpret Lexus’ philosophy of Authentic Luxury through a spatial installation.

The experience needed to feel immersive yet restrained.

Not expressive for its own sake, but intentional in every detail.

A room defined not by what is added,

but by what is carefully resolved.

The Concept

A palette of warm, grounded tones was developed. Inspired by clay, timber, and natural earth pigments.

Materiality became the foundation of the space, allowing texture and tone to carry the experience rather than decoration.

Pattern was introduced not as surface treatment, but as cultural language.

Referencing traditional African motifs and subtly echoing the geometry of the Lexus grille, it created a dialogue between heritage and contemporary form.

The space was designed to feel:

Rooted

Calm

Intentional

Enduring

Translating Lexus Into Space

The installation explored how automotive design principles could be expressed through interior architecture.

Precision was reflected in the detailing — in joinery, alignment, and proportion.

Material richness was expressed through layered natural finishes.

Lighting was treated as atmosphere rather than feature — soft, controlled, and directional.

Each decision was guided by restraint.

The result was a space that did not compete for attention, but revealed itself gradually through experience.

Afro-modern interior featuring a Basotho-inspired patterned feature wall, an Africa-shaped illuminated niche shelf, a cognac leather chaise lounge, and sculptural brass tables, styled in a calm, low-lit NIZARRA aesthetic with warm tones and architectural depth.

Meticulously Crafted - Spatial Interpretation

The Lounge

A grounded seating composition designed to encourage pause and stillness. The arrangement prioritised comfort without excess, allowing the space to feel open and composed.

The Feature Wall

A patterned surface acting as both focal point and narrative element. It anchored the space while quietly referencing cultural geometry and brand identity.

Material Transitions

Subtle shifts between finishes, from matte surfaces to warmer textures, created depth without visual noise.

Lighting Atmosphere

Low, directional illumination introduced contrast and shadow, reinforcing the calm and considered nature of the space.

Designed Moments Within the Space

The installation demonstrated how brand philosophy can be translated into spatial experience.

Rather than replicating automotive design, the project explored its underlying principles: precision, restraint, and material clarity, and reinterpreted them through an interior lens.

The result was a space that felt aligned with Lexus, yet grounded in NIZARRA’s own design language.

A quieter expression of luxury.

One shaped through culture, material, and intent.

NIZARRA continues to explore how contemporary African design can engage with global brands, creating spaces that are both locally rooted and internationally resonant.

We collaborate with private clients and brands to create spaces shaped by culture, material, and intent.
